Learning to listen

One of the reasons that your partner may not understand what you have said is due to the way they may focus their attention on just a small part of what you are saying and will not appear to have heard the rest. When this happens, repeat what was said and perhaps explain it in a different way. Check they have understood the meaning behind what was said by asking them to repeat it to you in their own words.

One exercise that I found very useful when working with couples is the ‘listening task’. Each partner takes turns in talking for two minutes about a completely neutral subject. During this time the other has to listen and not interrupt. Afterwards they repeat what they have heard to the partner who spoke. Each partner takes turns each day to do this. As both become more equipped at listening, the time could be extended or more personal subjects talked about. Experiment with this exercise and see what works for you.
